A former Liverpool flop has been hailed as one of the best players in Serie A after a series of impressive displays for Fiorentina.

Arthur Melo arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2022 on loan from Juventus as Jurgen Klopp looked to address an injury crisis that had decimated his midfield options.

Without Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Liverpool boss turned to the Brazilian in the closing stages of the transfer window.

But Melo, who had joined Juventus from Barcelona for £69million just two years earlier, endured a nightmare season on Merseyside. 

An unused substitute against Everton, he made his debut four days later as he came on for 13 minutes in Liverpool’s 4-1 loss against Napoli in the Champions League.

The short cameo would prove to be Melo’s first and final appearance for the Reds, as he was an unused substitute for the draw against Brighton and the win against Ajax.

The 27-year-old then suffered an injury in training which required him to have surgery and sidelined him until the end of February.

After returning to fitness, Melo was included in the matchday squad just five times in Liverpool’s remaining 13 games of the season but never came off the bench.

With the Reds never likely to exercise their £32m option to make the deal permanent, Melo eventually cut his disastrous loan spell short and returned to Juventus in the summer before joining Serie A rivals Fiorentina on loan.

And the Brazil international has wasted no time in putting his Anfield ordeal behind him, with a string of impressive displays for Fiorentina.
