SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Following the conclusion of the January training camp, former Duke players Brian White and Ian Murphy are preparing for the U.S. Men’s National Team international friendly on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m., EST.
White and Murphy are both seeking their first international caps after earning their first national team training camp call-ups in early January.
Murphy, who played for the Blue Devils from 2018-2021, made 69 appearances for Duke while scoring three goals and adding seven assists. He was picked 14th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by FC Cincinnati before making his professional debut in March 2022 and scoring his first goal for the club during the 2022 season. The left-footed defender set new career-highs in starts and minutes played during 2023 and has made a total of 66 appearances for FC Cincinnati. The club recently announced it had exercised its contract option for the Redlands, Calif., native for the upcoming 2024 season. Prior to his arrival in Durham, Murphy spent time in residency with the U.S. U17 Youth National Team and is making his first appearance in a USMNT camp.
White played four seasons for the Blue Devils, scoring 23 goals in 73 appearances. He was drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by New York Red Bulls and was traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in June of 2021 after making 47 appearances and scoring 15 goals for Red Bulls. White scored 20 goals, to establish himself as the top-scoring American in all leagues, and also tallied five assists across all competitions during the 2023 calendar, led MLS with eight header goals and had the third-most non-penalty goals in the league with 15. Across all competitions that Vancouver appeared in, White put home at least one goal. The Flemington, N.J., native earned the club’s golden boot award following the 2023 season and is making his first appearance on a U.S. men’s national team camp roster. White is under contract with the Whitecaps through the 2025 season with a club option for 2026.
Saturday’s friendly is played at Toyota Field in San Antonio and is broadcast on TNT, Telemundo, Universo, MAX, Peacock and FDP.
