KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Current have executed a trade with the Houston Dash for Canadian forward Nichelle Prince. In exchange, the Dash will receive forward Cece Kizer and an international slot for 2024.
“Nichelle is a dynamic attacking player with success in the NWSL and on the international stage,” said general manager Camille Ashton. “We are excited to bring her to Kansas City where her experience and professionalism will add great value to the club.”
“I am very happy to add Nichelle to this roster,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Bringing a player of her quality to the club continues to strengthen the team as the competition within the squad grows stronger.”
Prince was originally drafted by the Dash with the 28th overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. She made an immediate impact for her club, playing all but one game her rookie season. She played in at least 16 games per season, with the exception of 2019 and 2023 where she was recovering from injuries suffered while playing internationally for Canada. In the inaugural 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, Prince played a pivotal role for the Dash as she and her teammates captured the first title in the tournament and the first hardware ever for the Houston franchise.
Internationally, Prince has been part of the Canadian national teams since playing with the U17 team in 2010. Her senior team debut came in 2013 a 1-0 win over China. She has 96 caps for her country with 16 goals and 12 assists. She has been part of the two World Cup teams (2019, 2023) and helped her country to a Bronze medal in the 2016 London Olympics and a Gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Kizer, an Overland Park native, came to Kansas City in a trade from Racing Louisville in 2022. In two seasons she holds the Current records for most goals scored (13) and ranks second for most goals scored in a single season (7, 2022). She now returns to Houston, where she was originally drafted in 2019. She has 80 appearances, 18 goals and seven assists in her career.
“We are incredibly grateful for the impact Cece has made on our club over the past two seasons,” said Ashton. “These decisions are always difficult, but we want to thank her and wish her the best going forward.”
