Florida State’s Echegini Wins 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (theACC.com) – After leading Florida State to its fourth Women’s College Cup National Championship and an undefeated season, Seminole midfielder Onyi Echegini has won the 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to the top player in NCAA Division I soccer.

Echegini is the 16th recipient of the Hermann Trophy from the Atlantic Coast Conference, while current membership has claimed 20 awards since its inception in 1988. An ACC student-athlete has won the Hermann Trophy four straight times, which ties the ACC’s previous record from 1991-1994. She is the fourth Seminole to earn the award.

The London, England, native became the first player since 2014 to earn ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Tournament MVP honors in the same season. The senior led the ACC in goals (16) and tied for the conference lead with teammate Jordynn Dudley in total points (37). Five of Echegini’s goals came in the postseason, including two goals in the conference final in a 2-1 victory over Clemson. The midfielder also tallied a goal and an assist in the national final in a 5-1 win over Stanford.

In December, Echegini became the third FSU player to win the Honda Sport Award, which is presented to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics.”

The MAC Hermann Trophy, a 10-pound crystal soccer ball, is awarded to the United Soccer Coaches National Players of the Year in NCAA Division I men’s and women’s soccer based on voting conducted by member coaches.
