The amount of football scheduled over the Christmas period is enough to evoke memories of the That Mitchell and Webb sketch where a man paces aggressively around a stadium proclaiming: “The football is officially going on forever!”

For those with a less cynical mind, Wednesday provides another chance to lap up the latest offerings of Premier League football on our television screens, with the return of Manchester City from their Club World Cup triumph the main point of attraction.

Wolves and Chelsea, who duked it out on Christmas Eve at Molineux, are also in action.

Here are Wednesday’s Premier League fixtures and how you can watch them.

Brentford have been afforded a more cushy festive period as their clash with Man City was postponed. The Bees haven’t played since a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday 17 December and should be fresher than upcoming opponents Wolves.

The Wanderers aren’t consistent but have managed to score big wins over some of the Premier League’s top sides to keep them in a steady mid-table position. The latest victory was against fellow middling side Chelsea, taking them level on points with the Blues.

Chelsea had their chances to avoid that defeat at Wolves last time out but weren’t clinical enough in the final third. They’ll hope for the opportunity to retain their top-ten spot in the Premier League table when Crystal Palace travel across London for their meeting at Stamford Bridge.

Roy Hodgson’s Eagles have picked up credible draws with Man City and Brighton in their last two games but haven’t won since a 2-0 success at Burnley in early November.

Man City took the final step in completing football in 2023 by beating Fluminense 4-0 in the Club World Cup final in Jeddah. However, they have a lot of work to do in the early part of 2024 if they are to retain their Premier League title.

The Citizens won’t have an easy time of it at Goodison Park, either. The Toffees were only just beaten by Tottenham last time out, having previously enjoyed a four-game winning streak in the top flight.
