UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men’s soccer student-athlete Peter Mangione was recognized as a College Sports Communicators third team Academic All-American on Tuesday. The senior forward is just the sixth player in program history to earn the distinction.
The 2023 Academic All-America Men’s Soccer Teams are selected by College Sports Communicators to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the men’s soccer season and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes men’s soccer honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Mangione, who was previously selected as Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators, had a stellar season as a senior, earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and an All-Big Ten first team nod from his 10 goal, four-assist season. He led the Big Ten with his 24 points on the season.
The Maryland native was named a United Soccer Coaches first team Scholar All-American along with achieving Fall Academic All-Big Ten for three consecutive semesters. Mangione also added United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region to his post season accolades.
The team captain graduated on Saturday with a degree in political science and an overall GPA of 3.62.
Mangione was just one of four Big Ten men’s soccer student-athletes to earn the Academic All-America honors. He is the first player since Pierre Reedy in 2021 to garner the Academic All-America title.
