ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four Big Ten men’s soccer student-athletes have been selected as Academic All-Americans by members of the College Sports Communicators (CSC), the organization announced on Tuesday. Indiana’s JT Harms and Joey Maher were named to the Second Team, while Michigan State’s Jonathan Stout joined Penn State’s Peter Mangione on the Third Team.
The 2023 Academic All-America Men’s Soccer Teams are selected by College Sports Communicators to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the men’s soccer season and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes men’s soccer honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Harms started all 24 of the Hoosiers matches this season, earning All-Big Ten Secon Team honors. The senior sports marketing and management major posted a 0.783 goals against average, 16th in the country, while leading Indiana to a share of the Big Ten regular season title, the Big Ten tournament championship, and the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.
Maher, a senior accounting major, saw action in all 24 contests, while recording 22 starts. The All-Big Ten First Team defender paired two goals and an assist, while anchoring a defensive effort that surrendered just 19 goals on the season and a league-low of seven markers in conference play.
Stout received All-Big Ten First Team honors after ranking second on the Spartans with five goals and 10 points. The sophomore statistics major tied for seventh in the Big Ten in goals and 10th in points, while leading Michigan State to the number three seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
Mangione capped his career earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors after leading the league with 10 goals and 24 points. The political science major led the Nittany Lions to a share of the Big Ten regular season title and a trip to the Big Ten Tournament championship game.
In order to be considered for Academic All-America status, students must not only maintain a minimum 3.30 GPA, but must also be a starter or key reserve, competing in at least 50 percent of their school’s contests.
