Halifax, NS – The Halifax Wanderers announced on Thursday that the club has extended the contract of head coach Patrice Gheisar through the end of the 2025 Canadian Premier League Season.

Gheisar, 48, made an instant impact during his first season at the club, clinching Halifax’s first-ever home playoff match. After finishing in seventh place in 2022, the new-look Wanderers under Gheisar finished 2023 in a tie for second place and set club records for most wins in a season (11), most points (42), most goals scored (39), and fewest goals conceded (32).

After that successful run, Gheisar was named a finalist for the CPL’s Coach of the Year award.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the impact Patrice has had in his first year with the club,” Wanderers President & Founder Derek Martin said. “We still have so much we want to achieve as a club, and I am excited to continue working with Patrice to reach our goals.”

Gheisar led a roster overhaul in Halifax that introduced 21 new players to the squad throughout 2023. Known for his ability to develop Canadian talent, Gheisar handed eight players their professional debut as part of a Wanderers side that was the second youngest in the CPL (average age 23.3) and the youngest of all teams that qualified for the playoffs.

He coached Halifax to his first career professional win on June 10, a 2-0 home victory against Valour FC that started a four-game unbeaten run for the Wanderers. Gheisar was named the CPL’s Manager of the Month for June.

“We’ve been really impressed with the work ethic, diligence and attention to detail since Patrice and his staff have joined us this past season,” sporting director Matt Fegan said. “It’s a promising start and we all know the hard work continues to reach our high goals. I’m excited to keep working together as we continue to build this project together.”

Gheisar is retaining his current coaching staff for next season, with assistant coaches Jorden Feliciano and Jed Davies and goalkeeping coach Jan Michael Williams all confirmed to return.
