HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford Athletic have signed midfielder Jay Chapman ahead of the 2024 season, pending league and federation approval.

Chapman comes to Hartford after a stellar season with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in 2023. In his first full season in the USL Championship, Chapman made 28 appearances and 20 starts, recording a goal and an assist along the way. He made his biggest impact gaining possession and creating scoring chances off turnovers for the Switchbacks, logging 25 interceptions, 19 chances created, and 26 tackles won, the second most on the team.

“Bringing in a player of Jay’s caliber is a tremendous addition to our Club,” said CEO Nick Sakiewicz. “He is one of the most experienced players in the USL and knows what it takes to win a championship at the highest level of U.S. soccer. He will bring a balance of experience, skill and a winning mentality to some of the younger talent we are bringing in this season.”

The 29 year old Canadian brings a wealth of experience to Hartford, having played more than 4,000 minutes over 112 appearances in Major League Soccer from 2015 to 2021. A product of the Toronto FC Academy, Chapman spent five seasons with his home town club and helped them towards their historic MLS Cup victory in 2017, the first time a Canadian team won the Cup. He was also a part of three Canadian Championships with Toronto and competed in the CONCACAF Champions League. Chapman scored six goals in 79 appearances and added three goals in the USL Championship for Toronto FC II. He moved to MLS side Inter Miami CF in 2020, making 33 appearances for the club across two seasons before joining Scottish Premiership club Dundee FC in 2022.

Before his professional career, Chapman was a standout at Michigan State University. He scored 12 goals in 64 appearances, was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America First Team in his junior season, and was voted the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year before signing as a Homegrown Player with Toronto FC.
