Washington, D.C. – Washington Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle has been called up to the Canadian Women’s National Team for its upcoming friendlies against Australia, Canada Soccer announced today.

Carle, who signed with the Spirit last December, has appeared for Canada in 38 international matches, including during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was recently named to Canada’s final roster for this summer’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Carle was also an alternate for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and made her debut in the Canadian national youth program in 2013 at 14 years old. She hails from Lévis, Quebec.

The Canadian women’s national team will play Australia in two international friendly matches on Friday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 5 in British Columbia. The matches will be held at Langford’s Starlight Stadium and Vancouver’s BC Place, respectively.

Carle started all 22 regular season matches for this Spirit this year, playing the second-most minutes on the team with 1,899, trailing only 2023 Iron Woman and fellow back line member Sam Staab. Carle also provided the game-winning assist on forward Trinity Rodman’s stoppage time score during the Spirit’s September 30 match against Kansas City. Before joining the Spirit, Carle played one year of professional soccer with Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women’s soccer in Sweden. There, she logged nearly 1,900 minutes in 22 matches, scoring two goals and adding one assist. Prior to turning pro, Carle was a two-time national champion (2018, 2021) under current Spirit President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian at Florida State and was a part of a 2021 Seminole backline that allowed only 13 goals in 25 games.

The Spirit will be back in action in 2024 with all home matches once again being played at Audi Field. In total, Washington hosted almost 120,000 fans across the club’s 11 regular season home matches in 2023, averaging nearly 11,000 in attendance per home match. Fans can secure their tickets to all home matches next season with a season membership.
