California men’s soccer players Wyatt Meyer and Santiago Hopkins were named to the College Sports Communicators NCAA Division I Academic All-District Team, CSC announced Tuesday. Meyer – who earned all-district honors for the second straight year – was also placed on the ballot for the CSC Academic All-America Team, with voting beginning Tuesday and ending Dec 5.

A student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and compete in 90% of the institution’s games or must start in at least 66% of the games to be nominated for the CSC Academic All-District Team.

A Berkeley native, Meyer is pursuing an undergraduate degree in English and a minor in history. A central back and a central defensive midfielder, the senior was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and voted to the All-Pac-12 First Team for a stellar 2023 in which he contributed to Cal’s stingy defense all over the field and started all 18 games. The Cal captain also posted two assists and scored his first goal since 2021 in the season finale against Stanford on Nov. 11 on The Farm.

Hopkins, a junior right back from West Hills who played in all 18 games for the Golden Bears this year, is majoring in mechanical engineering. The speedy and tenacious defender likewise had a strong season for the Bears, playing on a Cal squad that produced the program’s best overall goals-against average (1.06) since 2013 (0.97). Hopkins also scored his first career goal, on his first career shot, in a 1-1 draw with UCLA on Nov. 2 in Berkeley.
