CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson captured the 2023 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, downing North Carolina in a penalty-kick shootout at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The No. 4-seed Tigers rallied in the final 10 minutes of regulation to tie the game 1-1 and force overtime before hitting all of their penalties to win the shootout, 5-3.

Making its fourth ACC championship appearance in the last five seasons, Clemson (10-3-5) earned its 16th ACC Championship in program history, including its fifth tournament title (1998, 2001, 2014, 2020, 2023). The Tigers matched Virginia for the most ACC titles among current programs with 16.

North Carolina (10-3-6) made its first ACC championship game appearance since 2018 and the ninth in program history.

Clemson’s Ousmane Sylla scored three goals and tacked on a pair of assists in the tournament and was selected the championship’s Most Valuable Player.

After a scoreless first half, North Carolina broke the stalemate in the 49th minute when Andrew Czech sent a short pass into the box to find Quenzi Huerman, who then sent a low shot in to beat Clemson goalkeeper Joseph Andema just inside the far post. It marked his 10th goal of the season.

Clemson equalized in the 83rd minute when Sylla launched a rocket to the far upper corner for his 10th goal of the season.

The Tigers then buried all five of their penalty attempts, with Alex Meinhard clinching the championship by connecting on the fifth try.
