No. 11 Panthers Fall to No. 1 Florida State in ACC Championship Semifinals

CARY, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh No. 11 women’s soccer team (14-5-1, 6-2-1) fell to the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles (15-0-1, 9-0-1) in the 2023 Ally ACC Championship Semifinals at WakeMed Soccer Park, Thursday night, 2-0.

Pitt was able to create early scoring opportunities – posting two shots on goal by Landy Mertz and Amanda West in the first half. 

The Panthers were able to play to their advantages – holding a 3-1 lead in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of play.

Ellie Breech was able to post three major saves in goal – keeping the board even at 0-0 heading into the locker room.

Coming back for the final 45 minutes, the Panthers were ready for more. In the 61st minute, Mertz was able to place a shot on goal, but found the Florida State keeper’s hands.

Florida State tacked on their goals in the 69th and 74th minute of play.

Pitt didn’t give up the fight, as they continued to create chances. The Panthers finished this semifinal matchup with a total of eight shots and three on target and posted five corner kicks. Breech secured a total of five saves this evening in goal.

The Panthers now look ahead to the NCAA Tournament as they await their fate. The selection show will take place on Monday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. on NCAA.com.
