No. 24 Alabama Falls, 2-0, in Penalty Kick Shootout Against No. 18 Mississippi State

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Following a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action, the fifth seed and No. 24nationally ranked Alabama soccer team (11-4-5, 5-4-1 SEC) fell in a 2-0 penalty kick shootout against fourth-seeded and No. 18 Mississippi State (10-4-5, 5-3-2 SEC) in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Both teams concluded regulation in a 1-1 draw, forcing the Crimson Tide’s first overtime match since the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA Tournament against Duke. Brooke Steere netted a goal for the Tide in the 24th minute of the game following a corner kick, but a penalty kick by the Bulldogs in the second half evened the score.

“I was very pleased with our performance tonight. I thought we competed and played well. We had a lot of the ball and a ton of chances. They got a PK against the run of play to get them back into the game.

“Obviously, we wanted to advance in hopes of winning the tournament, but perhaps a few days of rest and recovery will do us well as we prepare for the NCAA Tournament.”

The Game

  • Steere scored the first goal of the day hitting a bouncing ball inside the six-yard box
  • The Crimson Tide would continue to dominate the game, but a handball inside the box set Aitana Martinez-Montoya up for a penalty kick in the 55th minute
  • Alabama held a commanding 20-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 lead in shots on goal
  • The penalty kick shootout was the first in program history for the Tide
  • Steere’s goal was her third of the year and second in as many games
  • UA forced a season-best eight saves from Maddy Anderson
