Calgary, AB – Cavalry FC defender Daan Klomp, forward Ali Musse, forward Myer Bevan, and Head Coach & General Manager, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. have all been recipients of awards this evening at the 2023 Canadian Premier League (CPL) Awards.
Daan Klomp left a lasting impression this season after being the only outfield player to have played every minute of every match for the club this season, while also netting four goals and providing one assist in 28 league appearances. In recognition of his immense efforts defensively and as a key player in the club’s title-winning season, Klomp has been awarded with both CPL Defender of the Year and Player of the Year.
Ali Musse made an immense impact throughout the 2023 season for Cavalry, where he netted five goals and provided six assists in 26 appearances. Having consistent back-to-back 2022 and 2023 seasons, he leads the team in chances created with 46 and is one of the top ranked in the league in shots, crosses and corners, passes in the opposition’s box, and possession won in the final third. He has made himself known widely across the league, as he has been selected by players across the league as the winner of the Player’s Player of the Year Award.
Myer Bevan led the league in goals with 11 scored and provided four assists for the club. He tied in goals scored with Atlético Ottawa’s Ollie Bassett, with both receiving the Golden Boot in recognition of this achievement.
Tommy Wheeldon Jr. led the club to not only a league title, but to the most successful 28-game season recorded in CPL history. With 16 wins and 55 points earned, Wheeldon Jr. led his side to glory, securing the CPL Shield and a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. This success has led to several of his players receiving awards this evening, but also to Tommy Wheeldon Jr. receiving the Coach of the Year Award.
The club congratulates Klomp, Musse, Bevan, and Wheeldon Jr. on their recognition this evening, and for their successes throughout the season.
Cavalry FC will push for the North Star Cup in the CPL Final on Saturday, October 28 at 4:00p.m. MT at Tim Hortons Field against Forge FC.
