CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A second-half goal from Jill Flammia was the difference on Thursday night (Oct. 19) as Virginia (7-3-5, 2-3-3- ACC) picked up three more points in the ACC standings with a 1-0 victory over Miami (3-8-4, 2-5-1 ACC) at Klöckner Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers applied pressure out of the gates in the second half and finally broke through in the 66th minute. Meredith McDermott dispossessed Miami as the Hurricanes approached the attacking third to start a counter for the Hoos. Allie Ross took off down the middle of the field and played a through ball out wide to Maggie Cagle on a run toward the box. Cagle made a move around the defender and sent the ball into the six where Jill Flammia headed it in for the score.
NOTES ON THE GAME
- Jill Flammia’s goal was her second of the season and sixth of her career. It’s her first game-winning goal.
- Maggie Cagle took over the team lead in assists (6) with her pass to Flammia for the game-winning strike.
- Cayla White moved into a tie for ninth in career wins at UVA (25) to match Megan Boehm (1996-2000).
- Talia Staude has now played 8,614 minutes for the Hoos and is second all-time at UVA as she passed Chantel Jones (2007-11) on Thursday night against the Hurricanes.
- Virginia is now 16-2-1 all-time against Miami and 11-0-0 in games played at Klöckner Stadium.

“Miami is a good team and they were very organize; they were much more defensive oriented today than in other games we’ve seen them play. I thought they did a good job and made it hard for us. We got the goal in the second half, which was huge. It was a great transition goal for us and that settled us down a little bit more. It was a tough game and was going to be a tough game with them playing such a low defensive block. Give our kids credit. They fought hard, played some good soccer and got the win which is the most important thing for us.”
UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia closes out the home portion of the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 22) when the Hoos host Boston College in a 2 p.m. contest at Klöckner Stadium. It will be senior day for the Cavaliers with ceremonies honoring six players prior to kick against the Eagles.
