Men’s Soccer Hosts No. 12 Northwestern in Key Big Ten Battle


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State men’s soccer team will take on No. 12 Northwestern on Friday, Oct. 13 in the program’s first ever ‘wear black’ match. Kickoff at Jeffrey Field is set for 7 p.m.
 
The Nittany Lions look to get back in the win column against Northwestern on Friday, October 13, after falling 2-1 to Indiana on Saturday, October 7. The Wildcats will be a tough test for the Nittany Lions as they sit atop the Big Ten standings with a conference record of 3-0-1.

PROMOTION

  • Penn State men’s soccer is hosting its first ever ‘wear black’, encouraging fans in attendance to wear black in support of the team. The Nittany Lions will be wearing their throwback black and pink kits for the second time this season after defeating Maryland in those uniforms on September 19. 
  • The first 150 fans in attendance at the game will receive a free Penn State men’s soccer scarf.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State fell to Indiana in a 2-1 decision on Saturday, October 7.
  • Indiana’s Samuel Sarver opened the scoring in the 21st minute after a strong tackle in the midfield and a subsequent pass from Hugo Bacharach.
  • Kris Shakes made a massive kick save on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to keep the Hoosiers from extending their lead.
  • Just seconds later, Peter Mangione fielded a Kris Shakes’ punt and quickly got behind the Indiana keeper to score the equalizer before halftime.
  • Hugo Bacharach and Samuel Sarver connected again on Sarver’s second goal during the opening minutes of the second half to put the Hoosiers ahead.
  • Penn State suffered their first loss in Big Ten play this season.

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State is second in the Big Ten in points (50) and goals (14).
  • Kris Shakes’ 36 saves are good for second in the conference. He also places second in the Big Ten in shutouts (5) and save percentage (.818).
  • Peter Mangione ranks second in the conference in goals with five and is tied for second in game-winning goals with three.
