Men’s Soccer Set for Road Test at UNC Greensboro


GREENSBORO N.C.- The Penn State men’s soccer team returns to non-conference action with a road contest at UNC Greensboro. The Nittany Lions and Spartans will square off for the very first time on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
 
Penn State looks to build off its 1-0 victory against Maryland on Tuesday night and seek its third consecutive win. The result against the Terps was the Nittany Lions seventh consecutive win in their annual Mack Brady Match.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State returned home and pulled out a 1-0 victory against Maryland on Tuesday, Sept. 19. This was the first time the Nittany Lions shut out the Terps since 2005.
  • Penn State earned their fourth win of the season and second in Big Ten play, making them the only team with two conference victories in the Big Ten.
  • Peter Mangione scored the lone goal of the contest with a rocket in the 38th minute.
  • The game-winner was Mangione’s third of the season and 12th of his career.
  • Kris Shakes earned another clean sheet, his third of the season, with five saves on the night.
  • Liam Butts was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after his hat trick against Ohio State last Friday. He owns the most conference titles of any active Big Ten player. 

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State sits atop the Big Ten standings and is the only team to record a conference victory to this point.
  • Peter Mangione and Liam Butts are tied for third in the Big Ten in goals with three each.
  • Mangione’s three game-winning goals place him tied for first in the conference.
  • Kris Shakes leads the Big Ten in saves with 32.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is 1-4-3 on the 2023 season. Of note, the Spartans lost 2-0 to Maryland on August 27 and beat Charlotte 2-1 on September 9.
  • UNCG is coming off an Elite 8 appearance in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Ohio State and Stanford on penalty kicks before falling to national runner-up Indiana by a score of 2-0.
