TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Soccer has announced its 2023 non-conference schedule, as in head coach Graham Winkworth‘s seventh season at Arizona State, the Sun Devils are slated to play five home games and four road matches ahead of their Pac-12 schedule this fall.
“I’m very excited about our schedule for 2023 as we particularly have some excellent home matches,” Winkworth said. “It was very difficult assembling a schedule as most of this was done during a period of unknown (COVID-19). To have exciting and quality games will be awesome for all parties involved.”
Included in ASU’s schedule are contests against Mississippi State and New Mexico State, two teams that qualified for last season’s NCAA Tournament and three teams the program has never faced.
The 2022 season included the program’s second NCAA appearance in three seasons, as it came to an end with a loss at No. 8 seed Portland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA match was the last for ASU’s outstanding quartet of fifth-year seniors: forwards Nicole Douglas and Olivia Nguyen and midfielders Alexia Delgado and Eva van Deursen. The four players combined for 337 games played and 298 starts while collectively amassing 101 goals and 73 assists. Following the season, Winkworth won the 2022 Wings of Gold Linda Vollstedt Coach of the Year.
This fall will feature 14 new Sun Devils including three graduate transfers, one goalkeeper, five forwards, two midfielders and defensemen along with four who are capable of playing multiple positions. Also joining the Maroon and Gold for the first time is assistant coach Hollie Loud.
As a team, the Sun Devils went 9-6-3, 5-5-1 Pac-12 last season.
