San Diego Wave FC (4-3-0, 12 points) defeated Kansas City Current (2-5-0, 6 points) 2-0 at Children Mercy’s Park on Sunday afternoon. Forward Alex Morgan scored her team-high fifth goal of the season and midfielder Belle Briede notched her first goal of the season.

For the second-straight match, Morgan scored while putting the Wave ahead in the 26th minute. The ball was played over the top by goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan that ultimately fell to midfielder Sofia Jakobsson, who turned and took a shot that was blocked by Kansas City. The rebound fell to Morgan, who’s shot hit the post and ricocheted off Current goalkeeper AD Franch to find the back of the net.

San Diego doubled the lead before the end of the first half off a goal from Briede. Following an opportunity in the box for the Wave, defender Christen Westphal applied pressure to the Current’s backline that resulted in a giveaway. Westphal laid off a pass to Briede who precisely curled a right-footed shot into the upper corner to give the visiting side a 2-0 edge going into halftime.

Sheridan was forced to make four saves in tonight’s match, as the Wave managed to limit the home team’s scoring opportunities throughout the 90-minute contest. Kansas City’s most dangerous chance occurred in the 64th minute as Current’s midfielder Debinha hit a perfectly placed free kick on frame, forcing Sheridan to produce a game-saving block to preserve the lead and maintain the shutout.

Next on the schedule: The Wave will play their final match in the three-game road stretch when they travel to Texas to take on the Houston Dash on Saturday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. PT. The match will be aired live on Paramount+.

Notes:

Midfielder Sierra Enge earned her first regular season start and appearance for the Wave. The local Cardiff native was drafted by San Diego in the 2023 NWSL Draft with the 12th overall pick. Enge had previously started and played 90 minutes for the Wave’s opening match of the UKG NWSL Challenge Cup on April 19.

Forward Alex Morgan notched her fifth goal of the season. The U.S. Women’s National Team star now has 25 goals in all competitions since joining San Diego, the most in the league during that time. That total now beats Morgan’s goal output in all NWSL competitions from 2015 to 2021 combined by one.
