Mexico to face Cameroon as part of MexTour

The Mexican national team will face Cameroon in a friendly on June 10 at San Diego’s SnapDragon Stadium as part of the 2023 MexTour.

More games for the tour are to be announced soon.

The match against Cameroon serves as the final preparation for El Tri, before confronting the US men’s national team in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal and participating in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Pending the result of the USMNT vs. Mexico match up, El Tri will compete in the final or third-place game on June 18 in Las Vegas. Just days after, Mexico kicks off the Gold Cup group stage against Honduras on June 25 at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The upcoming tournaments come as new head coach Diego Cocca’s first real challenges, after taking the reins for the senior team in February. He currently holds a 1W-2D record, after leading in two CONCACAF matches and a friendly during a non-FIFA window.

But the expectations are high, given Mexico’s recent history. Their disappointing group stage exit during the 2022 FIFA World Cup incited multiple changes within the Mexican Football Federation, including the departures of Sporting Director Jaime Ordiales and President Yon De Luisa, in hopes to radically improve the organization as a whole.

The team must also return to winning ways in CONCACAF, after falling to rival USMNT in the last editions of both the Nations League and Gold Cup.
