Caicedo to Liverpool? Barnes reckons ‘fantastic signing’ would help two current Reds stars

Moises Caicedo wraps up warm

Liverpool legend John Barnes has urged Jurgen Klopp to complete the “fantastic signing” of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Caicedo is one of several midfield players being linked with a move to Anfield this summer.

The Reds are in need of midfield reinforcements and had been one of the favourites to land Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham before pulling out of the race.

Ecuadorian international Caicedo is attracting lots of interest with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United also believed to be in the race.

The Gunners had a £70million bid rejected by Brighton in January and are expected to go back in for him at the end of the season.

It is no surprise to see the 21-year-old valued so highly given his excellent showings for the Seagulls.

Amazingly, he only cost Albion €5m in what has been one of many incredible coups made by the club’s scouting team.

As well as Caicedo, Roberto De Zerbi’s side are in danger of losing Alexis Mac Allister this summer.

The Argentine is attracting interest from the same clubs that are looking at Caicedo, except for Arsenal, who are pursuing Rice and the young Ecuadorian.

With Liverpool desperately needing to renovate in the middle of the park, the club’s former winger John Barnes has said Caicedo would be a “great addition” and likened him to another ex-Red, Gini Wijnaldum.

“I think Moises Caicedo would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,” Barnes told indiabetting.

“Liverpool plays with two defensive midfielders, so he would be a great addition to the squad.

“He works very hard in the midfield, just like Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho and Wijnaldum, when he was here.

Barnes added that he thinks the addition of Caicedo would greatly benefit Jurgen Klopp’s two full-backs.

“To have players like Caicedo in the midfield allows Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and (Andy) Robertson to go forward because of the structure in the midfield,” he said.

“So to have a player like him would be fantastic for Liverpool.”

A lot of Liverpool’s success in recent years has been thanks to their hard-working midfield, and Barnes believes signing players to fit that philosophy will be more beneficial than bringing in technically gifted midfielders; noting that Fulham’s Joao Palhinha would be a handy signing.

“Palhinha is quite similar to Moises Caicedo. Yes, he does get forward as well but his main focus is to work hard and defend,” Barnes said.

“I definitely think that Palhinha and Caicedo…
