Neville names ‘only’ way Arsenal will beat Man City to title as Souness claims Pep ’embarrassed’ Gunners

Gary Neville speaks about Man City

Gary Neville thinks the only chance Arsenal have of beating Man City to the Premier League title is if Kevin de Bruyne, Erling Haaland and Rodri pick up injuries.

The Citizens struck a big blow to the Gunners’ title chances by beating them 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Arsenal have led the Premier League for much of the season but, ahead of Man City’s match against Fulham on Sunday, Pep Guardiola’s men are now two points behind with two games in hand.

And speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the match, Neville fancies Man City to go on and win the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League treble this season.

Neville said on Sky Sports: “I agree with Jamie [Redknapp], it would be disappointing for them now, I think. Because when we [Manchester United] won the treble back in ’99 there was no evidence to suggest that we were better than the Arsenal team – because they’d won the league and the double the year before.

“And when you look at the actual Champions League final, Bayern Munich were an exceptional team who had a better record in Europe than us. So were always doubted to the very end, whether we could go through and do it, whereas with City now they are so superior to the teams that they’ve got left to play.

“Obviously, they do meet history in Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final – but then you do have to dismiss those types of things, that’s emotion really.

“It doesn’t exist in football sometimes where a team in a stadium can galvanise something. This stadium can do it [pointing around at Anfield] we’ve seen that before.

“But I think City now will really fancy themselves, they are in such good form, all their players are fit. I’m not sure what has happened to [Kevin] De Bruyne today and why he’s not in the squad, maybe find that out in a few minutes, but only injuries to maybe [Erling] Haaland, De Bruyne, and Rodri I think is the other one, I think would leave a massive dent in their treble hopes.

“And I’m keeping my fingers crossed that something happens.”

Fellow pundit Graeme Souness was impressed by Man City in their win over Arsenal and felt Guardiola’s men “embarrassed” Mikel Arteta’s side.

Souness added: “Man City I think in midweek showed they are true champions. They turned up and I can’t tell you in my time in football a game between first and second and a gap being so enormous.

“They really embarrassed Arsenal. If they’d won 7-0 the other night it wouldn’t have…
