Wright rues Arsenal star’s glaring error vs Man City; Merson sends Gunners title warning for 23/24

Arsenal man slammed by Wright

Ian Wright did not like the actions of one Arsenal player in the early stages of their 4-1 defeat at the Etihad against Manchester City.

The Gunners realistically needed to beat City on Thursday night to remain in the hunt for the Premier League title but they were beaten 4-1.

Given their recent brilliance, Man City are now expected to win the title at a canter. As things stand, they will move four points clear at the top if they win their two remaining games in hand.

With only five games remaining, the best points tally Arsenal can finish on is 90. Man City meanwhile will end up on 94 if they take maximum points from the rest of their fixtures.

Arsenal were convincingly beaten by Man City as the visitors were barely able to lay a glove on Pep Guardiola’s team.

The Gunners were under pressure from kick-off and Kevin De Bruyne fired City ahead inside the opening ten minutes. But Gabriel Jesus spurned an opportunity to break the deadlock shortly before the Belgian’s goal.

Wright thinks Jesus needed to do better with this opportunity when Arsenal were “on the back foot”.

“It was the only way you were going to get something off them [City],” Wright said on MOTD.

“You look where Jesus is [out on the left] and this is the only way Arsenal are going to get any sort of half chance. They did finally break through at one stage and then you look at that [no Arsenal players in the City box].

“That is where you want your striker because you are not going to get too many opportunities where are you going to be able to break into City and do that. That was five minutes in, you have to take it to put them on the back foot.”

Paul Merson meanwhile fears Arsenal have no chance of winning the title next season as Man City are “head and shoulders above” everyone else in the Premier League.

“Watching Man City here I just can’t see them losing. They’ve got to lose two football matches virtually before the end of the season. Phenomenal, they’re head and shoulders above anybody,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I said it before, Arsenal had to take their chances, you might never get in that position again. Looking at that Man City team, there’s no way Arsenal are finishing above Man City next season.

“They don’t realise how close they’ve come this season but that’s it it’s impossible, nailed on.”
