Aaron Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka, Arsenal, February 2022

Anyone will a sense of perspective knows that Arsenal have over-achieved just being in a title race. And Man City don’t spend, spend, spend.

Disappointing for Arsenal? Have some perspective
I like debate. I enjoy people’s passion. Their unwavering support. I want my team to win. I’ve just never understood tribalism. By which, I mean the tribalism whereby you’re happy saying utterly ridiculous things just because a team that isn’t your own, (and may have been considered a rival at some point), is doing well.

Maybe it’s about perspective? There are only four trophies up for grabs each year. Three for most teams. This absolutism that the only success is a trophy is madness. Anyone seeking to denigrate Arsenal’s season because they’ve had the temerity to draw a few games in the face of the inevitable Man City onslaught is either jealous or just plain childish. Probably both. They’ve had an excellent season, having progressed hugely. Should my team, Villa, fail to get a European spot I’m not going to suddenly see that as a failure. Though I’m certain some now would.

Then we jump to next season. Could Arsenal finish outside the top four? Yes, easily. Outside the top six? Yeah, possibly. The Premier League is about to change. Only Man City can guarantee Champions League football currently. With Newcastle joining the big table and with Brighton, Villa, and maybe Brentford looking to be regular European challengers the numbers simply don’t work. 7 into 4 (Champions League slots) doesn’t go. 10 into 7 (European spots) doesn’t go.

Each year different teams will miss out on CL or European football. Chelsea are going to this season. Spurs may well do too. Does that mean they’ll miss out the following year? Absolutely not. Maybe I’m being overly hopeful but I’m finally seeing the potential for a PL where things are mixed up a bit. I don’t think this is a one-season December World Cup thing.

Change is coming and entitlement and envy will be dangerous and only lead to disappointment. Your team (unless it’s City) won’t likely achieve what you want it to year-in-year-out. Thus, if you’re one of those suggesting this is (or more accurately could be) a disappointing season for Arsenal; throw yourself a year or two forward and ask if you’d take it at your club given the increasing competition brewing in the top half of the table.

Please show your working.
