Finance expert claims bidder will have ‘two ways’ to secure ‘return on investment’

Man Utd takeover

Finance expert – Kieran Maguire – has discussed the interest in Man Utd from American investors Carlyle, who want to buy a minority stake in the club.

Man Utd have been up for sale since November last year. Over the past few months, there have been two rounds of bids and it remains to be seen whether a full sale will be formalised.

Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are interested in a full takeover of Man Utd, while several other bidders are keen to acquire a minority stake from the Glazer family.

The club’s current owners currently do not have the funds required for the work that needs to be done to modernize Old Trafford and their Carrington training ground.

From this perspective, a minority takeover would be ideal for the Glazer family. They would benefit from an influx of funding while also remaining in control. But this would be a largely unpopular outcome in the eyes of the club’s supporters and several former players, including Gary Neville.

It was revealed earlier this month that Carlyle – a firm with assets worth more than £298m – have tabled a proposal to the Glazer family with the view to becoming the club’s new minority investors.

A third round of bids are set to be reviewed by the Glazer family and it is unlikely that a deal will be finalised before the end of this season.

Maguire thinks Carlyle’s “entre focus” will be based on “getting a return on their investment”. He has explained that they will have “two ways” to make this happen.

“The likes of Carlyle and Elliott are pure investment vehicles,” Maguire told Football Insider.

“They are willing to play the long game in terms of getting a return on an investment.

“But their entire focus and aim would be getting a return on their investment.

“So all decisions at the club would be made through a financial lens.

“This could arise in one of two ways – they could take Chelsea’s approach and invest significant amounts in the squad with mixed results, or they could take a scientific and more data-based model.“

“When it was announced in November that the Glazers were undertaking a ‘strategic review’ and inviting offers to buy the club, MUST welcomed the news and went on to urge the majority owners to move ahead with the…
