Newcastle United urged to sign ‘stagnating’ Arsenal defender and ‘grumpy’ Man City attacker

Newcastle target Arsenal man

Stan Collymore thinks Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney would be “really good” for Newcastle United next season if he signs for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Scotsman initially performed well for Arsenal following his £25m move from Celtic ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

His potential progress over the past couple of years has been hampered by injuries. He was unavailable for much of last season and this term has slipped behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order.

Tierney is expected to leave Arsenal this summer so he can play on a more consistent basis. Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in the defender.

The Magpies will need to strengthen this summer ahead of their likely return to playing in the Champions League.

Collymore thinks Tierney has “stagnated”of late but he would be a “really good player” for Newcastle.

“I really like Kieran Tierney. When he first moved from Celtic to Arsenal there were a lot of comparisons made between him and Liverpool’s Andy Robertson,” Collymore told Caught Offside.

“However, I still think at the age of 25 and with Howe’s exceptional individual coaching methods that there is still plenty of time for the Scotsman to enjoy the same kind of success Liverpool’s number 26 has.

“If Newcastle have the money available to look at signing quality players in the summer then there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t go out and get Tierney. He’d be a really good player for them – he would offer some very good balance, he loves to get forward but he is also solid defensively.”

Newcastle will likely add to their squad in several positions and Collymore reckons they should also “seriously consider” signing Riyad Mahrez from Man City.

This transfer will be more difficult to pull off, especially after his hat-trick against Sheffield United in their FA Cup semi-final over the weekend.

City boss Pep Guardiola recently admitted that Mahrez is sometimes “grumpy” with him and Collymore believes Newcastle must “go all out for him”.

“Riyad Mahrez is another player I think Newcastle should be seriously considering,” Collymore added.

“I know he’s played a fair amount of football this season, probably more than he was…
