Father of Tottenham flop claims son is ready to ‘take a bigger leap’ to a club ‘like Real Madrid’

Tottenham defender Emerson Royal points instructions to his team-mates

Emerson Royal’s father claims his son is ready to leave Tottenham and “take a bigger leap” to a club “like Real Madrid” this summer.

Spurs signed the Brazil international in 2021 from Barcelona for £25.8m with the defender struggling to make a good impression at the north London club.

Royal has often been criticised for his role in Tottenham defeats with his defending costing the club on a number of occasions.

The 24-year-old only played three times for Barcelona before moving to the Premier League, spending most of his time at the Camp Nou on loan at fellow La Liga side Real Betis.

And former Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish thinks Royal is still “struggling to cope with the pace” and the quality of the Premier League.

“People think because he came from Barcelona he must be absolutely brilliant,” McLeish told Football Insider last month.

“But he never really cemented himself there. A lot of the players coming from Italy or Spain, unless they are household names, they really struggle.

“The English game is very very fast, and it’s the hardest league in the world. He’s struggling to cope with the pace and he’s not dealing at all well with the quality.

“Even Barcelona can get things wrong now and again. Everyone who comes through their system isn’t going to make the grade in this country.”

Despite struggling at times for Tottenham, his father reckons it could be time for Royal to leave for a “bigger” club with his dad having La Liga giants Real Madrid in mind.

Emerson Zulu told the Charla Podcast: “There is a great possibility that Emerson will leave Tottenham. We believe it’s time for him to take a bigger leap and to go to a team that fights for titles. I think he fits a giant like Real Madrid.”

Royal, who underwent surgery on the meniscus in his knee, was absent for Spurs’ 6-1 loss to Newcastle United on Sunday which leaves their hopes of qualification for next season’s Champions League looking more unlikely.

Tottenham conceded five goals in the first 21 minutes of their match against Newcastle with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris hooked at half-time.

That led to rumours that the Frenchman had been taken off because of his poor performance but Lloris revealed after the match that he had suffered a hip injury.

The Tottenham captain explained: “I don’t know, I think it’s a muscle. Around the hip I felt something on the long kick.

“It doesn’t sound good and we will see tomorrow after a scan.”
