Howe singles out Newcastle man with ‘a bit of everything’ after ‘incredible’ Spurs thrashing

Eddie Howe acknowledges the fans

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has praised his side’s “incredible” showing against Tottenham on Sunday.

The Magpies went into Sunday’s game having been convincingly beaten 3-0 by Aston Villa last weekend.

However, they reacted brilliantly, dismantling their top-four rivals 6-1 at St James’ Park thanks to goals from Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Callum Wilson.

Howe was high in praise of his players, the home crowd and singled out midfielder Joe Willock.

“That’s the reaction we wanted and an incredible start,” he said. “The crowd were incredible for us.

“Not really [expecting that]. You don’t expect that. The quality of our finishing was incredible. They weren’t stick-on goals. We were lethal in front of goal.

“Everything about our first half an hour was where we want to be.

After the win, Willock said St James’ Park is “the best stadium in the world”.

Murphy opened the scoring after two minutes and made it 3-0 in the ninth minute courtesy of a long-range effort that left Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris flat-footed.

Having raced into a five-goal lead after 21 minutes, Murphy says the victory “means everything” to him and his side.

“Amazing we started so well, an amazing day for us,” he said.

On his superb second goal, he continued: “I wasn’t surprised, I was just happy to see it go in, when I struck it I knew it was a clean strike.

“It means everything, I always want to add value whether I’m starting or coming off on the bench, everyone wants to do it.”

Magpies right-back Kieran Trippier waxed lyrical about Howe and his coaching ability after the win.

“We let the supporters down last week and it was about responding well. I thought we did that,” the England international said.

“We got some goals early in the game. We showed throughout the season we want to be on the front foot.

“I thought Alex Isak was unbelievable. It’s healthy competition with Callum Wilson. Nobody complains when they don’t play.

“We shouldn’t be scared to say we want to play Champions League football. The games are running out. This stadium…
