‘Major Kane concern’ raised as Ten Hag is urged to pursue £132m alternative

Man Utd target Kane

Man Utd have been told why they should target Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer over Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

The Red Devils are going to be in the market for a new striker this summer. They have been short of options in that area of the pitch since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in December.

Wout Weghorst joined United on loan in January but he is not expected to secure himself a permanent move to Old Trafford.

Man Utd are instead likely to use the bulk of their summer funds on a striker. Kane is being linked with a transfer away from Spurs as his current contract with the Londoners is due to expire in 2024.

Osimhen meanwhile has netted 26 goals in 31 appearances for Serie A side Napoli this term. Recent reports have indicated that he is valued at around £132m with his contract not due to expire until 2025.

Dimitar Berbatov has now suggested that the “major concern” United will have about Kane is that he is not “getting any younger”.

“You cannot argue with the goalscoring record of Harry Kane,” Berbatov told GOAL. “He is one of the best of his generation in how he scores goals, how he plays the game, how he sees the game. He’s unbelievable.

“But the one concern I have is that age, he is [almost] 30 so nobody’s getting any younger. And in my mind, this is going to be a major concern if someone is going to buy him.

“When you say Spurs, the first thing on my mind is Harry Kane. So that legacy, it’s just too big for him to tarnish.

“It’s so difficult because you need someone who’s going to score goals, someone who’s going to be the right age so he can develop and get better and better and better.

“You have to use him for years to come and in my mind, that is Osimhen.

“This is the type of player I’d like to see for United.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has encouraged Kane to stay with them beyond this summer. He thinks the forward “can win a trophy” at his boyhood club.

“He can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs,” Levy claimed.

“But being a legend is also important. The fact that he’s top scorer of Tottenham Hotspur – he’s making history.

“I hope one day that there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium.”

On his reputation for tough transfer negotiations, Levy added: “I don’t consider myself a special negotiator or anything like that, I’m just acting in the best…
