CHARLOTTE N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced today the signing of goalkeeper Jake Agnew to a 25-day contract. Agnew attended the club’s 2023 Open Trial in February. He stayed with the Independence through the first week of preseason. Agnew then joined Appalachian FC and most recently competed against the Jacks in the 2nd Round US Open Cup match on April 5.

“Jake is a talented young goalkeeper who will provide cover for us during this busy stretch of games,” Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries said. “As Jake attended our open trial, we are familiar with him and know he will fit well with the group. We are confident in his abilities if he is called upon.”

A Farmington, Minnesota native, Agnew graduated from American University after he played at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina his first two years of college.

In Agnew’s senior season at American, he led the way in goalkeeping as the Eagles won the 2021 Patriot League Championship. He started in every game to help give the Eagles their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2004. Agnew started in 12 games his junior season at American, and earned 52 saves and two shutouts.

Agnew made an immediate impact for Appalachian State straight out of high school to win the 2016 Newcomer of the Year Award. In his freshman season, he made 14 appearances in goal with 38 saves. He finished his freshman year with a 0.98 goals against average, the second-highest in the Sun Belt Conference.

After a stint at Farmington High School, Agnew then transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. At IMG Academy, Agnew won Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014 and 2015 and won the Super 20’s National Championship in 2015.

“I couldn’t be more excited to start my professional career in Charlotte,” Agnew said. “I’d like to thank the coaching staff for this opportunity. I’m ready to work and help the team in any way that I can! I’ve heard great things about this city and the Charlotte Independence fans and can’t wait to experience my first game at American Legion Memorial Stadium.”

The Charlotte Independence continue the 2023 USL League One season at home on Wednesday, April 19 vs. Union Omaha. The match will be played at American Legion Memorial Stadium and first kick is set for 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at charlotteindependence.com.
