Liverpool set tone with £84million Bellingham offer as chasing pack expected to follow suit

Jude Bellingham, England, March 2023

Liverpool have sent Borussia Dortmund an offer of £84million for major target Jude Bellingham, as per reports, and the German side are keen to receive more bids.

Bellingham has established himself as one of the brightest stars in world football. The 19-year-old is having an impact at both club and international level.

He didn’t miss a game for England in the 2022 World Cup, a tournament in which he scored his first international goal and provided an assist in the round of 16.

For Borussia Dortmund, he’s been one of the most influential assets in the league and the Champions League. In European football this term, the Englishman has been directly involved in five goals in seven games.

In the Bundesliga, he’s had a direct hand in nine goals in 26 games. It’s little wonder that some of Europe’s biggest sides are keen on snapping him up.

Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City are just some of the names he’s been linked with. The Anfield outfit are the subject of the most frequent links.

Football agent Haydn Dodge recently suggested a bid nearing £100million has been sent by the Reds for Bellingham.

Caught Offside are reporting along the same lines, but with some clarification over a fee. They report Liverpool have ‘made an offer of £84million’ for the midfielder.

That’s a big step given it does not seem any other interested side has yet made an offer. It seems Dortmund are waiting for that to happen, though.

Indeed, the report states the Bundesliga outfit are ‘eager to receive additional proposals from other clubs between now and the summer’.

The prospect of a bidding war is by no means out of the question. A recent report suggested Bellingham is ‘valued at €140million’ (approx £123million).

As such, Dortmund’s expectation that they’ll receive more bids is likely as they’re hoping somebody is willing to pay nearer that fee.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if that was the case, too, and a few teams were looking to do that. For a player of Bellingham’s quality, at just 19 years of age, he could well command a fee north of £100million.

If a bidding war does take place between Liverpool and another side, or few sides, they’re unlikely to back down easily. That’s as multiple sources have suggested he’s the Reds’ top target for the summer.

While £84million might have been the first bid, it would be a massive surprise if it was the last.
