Jesse Marsch is thought to be a suitable candidate to take over as Leicester manager after the former Leeds boss held talks with the Foxes over their vacant position.
The club are thought to be considering bringing in a new manager after their clash with Bournemouth on Saturday, with Marsch among those vying for the position.
If caretaker’s Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell fail to get a result in that key relegation clash it’s thought the club will move quickly to appoint a successor to Brendan Rodgers, who left the club last Sunday.
The Leicester owners still hope they can hold off until the end of the season, at which point they would appoint a new permanent boss, but the priority is of course staying in the Premier League, and if they don’t think Sadler and Stowell can achieve that they’ll be forced into action.
They will consider an interim manager or a permanent arrival should they decide to make a change, with Sam Allardyce and Rafael Benitez both in the frame as short-term options.
But The Athletic claim that Marsch ‘has indicated he might be interested in taking the job even if Leicester go down to the Championship and he would oversee the attempt to return to the top flight’.
The report adds: ‘Marsch’s style, the 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress system forged at Red Bull Salzburg, is seen as suited to the players Leicester have at the moment and more easily adaptable for the squad, but Leicester are exploring all options as they try to secure their Premier League status.’
Leicester are currently second bottom and two points from safety after a rotten run which has seen them pick up just one point from seven games.
Chris Sutton reckons it’s “staggering” Leicester haven’t replaced Rodgers ahead of such a crucial game.
“It seems staggering that they have not replaced Rodgers yet, although I know Rafa Benitez is being heavily linked and there could be someone in place by the weekend,” Sutton said.
“The Foxes should not be in this mess, but they are… and now they have to get themselves out of it, starting here. I see this as a must-win game for them.”
