Frank Lampard text to BT Sport commentator underlines ‘total madness’ of Chelsea return

BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher has revealed a text message he received from Frank Lampard which underlines the “total madness” of his return to Chelsea.

Lampard made a sensational return to the Blues this week as interim manager following the sacking of Graham Potter.

He will take charge of Chelsea’s nine remaining Premier League games, starting with Wolves at Molineux on Saturday, as well as leading them in the Champions League.

Chelsea travel to Real Madrid for the first leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday, for a game Lampard was due to be on punditry duty for.

Speaking on 5 Live’s Friday Football Social, Fletcher revealed: “Frank Lampard was supposed to be with us in Madrid to do commentary for the Real Madrid v Chelsea match with me. He sent me a message saying ‘I’m supposed to be there working with you, and now I’m going to be on the line!’

“It’s total madness that he was going to be there anyway – now he’s going to be there in a very important capacity, let alone watching it and analysing it!

“You can imagine what his head’s like at the minute, when you were supposed to be working for the television, but now not only are you going to be there, but you’re going to be picking the team, working out the tactics, trying to motivate everybody – and in the process try and beat the European champions.”

In his first press conference back in the Stamford Bridge hotseat, Lampard explained how the opportunity to come back arose.

He explained:”A surprise in terms of you never know the decision the club are going to make. I’ve been particularly enjoying my time at home. When you get time at home you can throw yourself into your family.

“I’ve been pretty happy in that position but when I spoke to Paul and Laurence in the last 24-48 hours and what this is now, it was a decision that was, not simple, Chelsea can’t be simple, but that decision came through.

On whether, hand on heart, he thought he’d manage Chelsea again, Lampard said: “I didn’t think I’d ever be in this seat. I’m a confident person, I want to work hard and understand the game. It wasn’t my thought that I’d one day be back as Chelsea manager, it wasn’t in the first part of my mind.

“Not unfinished business. Now I’m here in a different period and just want to do as well as I can. Unfinished business just seems a little bit Hollywood.”
