Carlo Ancelotti ‘will be considered’ for a return to Chelsea should the manager leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, according to reports.
The Blues announced club record goal scorer and former manager Frank Lampard as interim coach for the remainder of the campaign on Thursday after sacking Graham Potter last Sunday.
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is allegedly considering as many as seven candidates to become the club’s permanent manager, with Ancelotti one of the American’s preferred options.
The Italian coach won a memorable double in the 2009/10 season at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues lifting the Premier League title and the FA Cup, so he would no doubt be a popular appointment.
According to a report from ESPN, Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino and Ancelotti are among the favourites to succeed Lampard next term.
Ancelotti, who has won a record-breaking four Champions Leagues during his incredible managerial career, is under pressure at Real Madrid, with his team trailing rivals Barcelona by 12 points in La Liga.
The manager is currently preparing to face Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final next Wednesday – a game that could ultimately determine his future.
Indeed, with the Spanish giants having such an incredible record in the competition, getting knocked out at this stage could be the final nail in the coffin for Ancelotti.
ESPN’s report notes that Ancelotti accepts that he could be sacked this summer, if he fails to deliver another Champions League after guiding Madrid to a record 14th title last term.
But, the 63-year-old has ‘restored his reputation as one of the game’s great coaches’ after returning to the Spanish capital following an 18-month spell as Everton manager.
He also recently responded to ridiculous rumours linking him with a switch to Barcelona, which suggest he is happy at the Bernabeu.
“I’d never join Barcelona in my life, impossible. No way,” Ancelotti said.
“My history is here at Real Madrid, the best club in the world. People love me here.”
Chelsea are reportedly determined to ‘retain the model of a coach working in tandem with a technical director’ – a system that Ancelotti has worked with throughout his career.
However, as mentioned, he is not the only candidate being considered, with ex-River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo being offered the role next season, according to some questionable reports.
