Erik Ten Hag says ‘quality’ Christian Eriksen has returned to training after two months out

Man Utd midfielder Christian Eriksen on the training pitch

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag has confirmed midfielder Christian Eriksen has returned to first team training.

The Denmark international suffered an ankle injury after United’s victory over Reading in the FA Cup in January, and has missed the last 15 games.

According to Ten Hag, Eriksen is now nearing a return and while not fit for Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Brentford, may be fit for next weeks Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla.

Ten Hag said: “Not for tomorrow but he’s returning on the pitch,

“He’s returning into team training today, so we have to see now how quickly he can make the progress.”

Eriksen may be back in time to reunite with midfield partner Casemiro, who is currently two matches in a four match ban following his second red card of the season.

United have won 11 of the last 13 games with Eriksen in the team and will be hoping his return will come soon.

Casemiro and Eriksen have been instrumental for Manchester United’s strong season under Ten Hag since signing last summer, and many have pointed to there absence as a reason for United’s current slump in form.

“They are two quality players” Ten hag said of the pair.

“The midfield department, games will always be decided in midfield, when you miss two quality players, it’s clear. But you have a squad, if you don’t have them you still have to win.”

United have only won three of their last nine Premier League matches, and have not won since beating Leicester on February 19.

Their latest defeat came at the hands of Newcastle, who comfortably defeated The Red Devils in a 2-0 win last Saturday.

Speaking on the defeat, Ten Hag said: “We had a very bad performance [against Newcastle] because the opponent wanted it more than us. They were sharper, you could see it in the challenges, we won only 16 from 61 challenges in offence, and in defence the opponent beat us 48 from 78 challenges. Then you can’t win a game.”

United will be hoping to get their Champions League push back on track when they face Eriksen’s former club Brentford tomorrow.

They currently sit fifth in the table, behind Tottenham on goal difference, but with two games in hand over the North London club.

Right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka could feature for United after recovering from an illness that kept him out of the Newcastle defeat, while Anthony Martial and Fred could also both feature after making comebacks from injuries.
