April 1, 2023 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release

DETROIT, Michigan – Rio Grande Valley FC (1-0-3, 6 pts) faced Detroit City FC (1-3-0, 3 pts) on the road under windy and chilly conditions but were able to heat up offensively to claim first win of the season 1-0 at Keyworth Stadium.

Taylor Davila found the first dangerous approach of the evening for RGV FC in the early goings of the match as he forced Nathan Steinwascher to make a save at the bottom right corner of his goal, clearing the ball to a corner kick at the 5th minute, 0-0.

Steinwascher was tested once again as he denied Wilmer Andres Cabrera who snuck into the box and sent a shot to the center of goal, 0-0.

Taylor Davila scored an individual goal as he stole the ball, then dribbled just into the box and placed a well-shot ground ball into the bottom right corner of the goal, taking a 1-0 lead at Keyworth Stadium at the 23-minute mark. This logged his second goal in as many matches, both coming from the same region of the field.

Rio Grande closed out the opening half with seven shots, three on target while limiting the home side to just three shots, none on target.

At the 78-minute mark, Tyler Deric made a crucial save inches in front of his goal as Detroit City found a loose bouncing ball and sent a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal; the shot was met by Deric who charged forward and made the save with his extended foot, 1-0.

Deric continued his heroics in the 85th minute as Oniel Fischer found a lobbed pass inside the box and attempted to chip it past the keeper; Deric charged toward the attacked and closed his space, sending the shot clear of danger, 1-0. This proved to be the final true danger defensively for the Toros as they closed out a well-managed match on the road.

On the night RGV shot 50% as they placed five on target out of ten total shots; Detroit City FC produced 12 shots, four on target but were unable to break the net as Tyler Deric logged four saves.

Next up for RGV FC is a Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup match at South Georgia Tormenta FC on Wednesday, April 5.
