Man City goalkeeper Ederson reveals ‘surprise’ at Liverpool star’s Brazil snub

Manchester City star Ederson has admitted his “surprise” at seeing Liverpool’s Alisson not being included in the Brazil squad for the March internationals.

Brazil have just one game to play in the international break, a friendly against Morroco on Saturday, and interim manager Ramon Menezes opted against calling up Alisson, who’s been the country’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2016.

Alisson has won 61 caps for Brazil, winning the 2019 Copa America, and has had to hold off strong competition from his Premier League rival throughout his time as No.1.

And despite Liverpool enduring a difficult season, Alisson has continued to impress for Jurgen Klopp’s side, leaving Ederson bemused at to why he’s been left behind.

“The first moment I saw the list I was surprised, but it’s the coach’s decision. They are choices, I thought he would be on the list, but he was not,” Ederson said.

“I do not know why, if it is a matter of opportunities for younger players. But we have to work, give our best, every day there is a good new player who can take that responsibility too.”

Despite being considered one of the best keepers in the world, Ederson has won just 19 caps for Brazil due to Alisson’s presence, and is hoping he can impress the new manager sufficiently to keep his starting spot.

He added: “I think it’s too early for that [talk of him being number one]. Of course it is always important to start a cycle, for me it is no different and I hope to start in the best way possible.

“But we know it is a long cycle, many things can happen, you can live many phases during this period. You have to work as hard as possible, maintain consistency so you can be here as many times as possible.”

Menezes was keen to reward the players who won the last South American Under-20 tournament for Brazil and included four of the Seleção’s most promising stars in his squad

New Chelsea signing Andrey Santos, Vítor Roque, Mykael and Robert Renan could be handed their senior debut, after shining under Menezes in the Under-20s.
