New England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink joins up with the Three Lions squad for March internationals… and links up again with boss Gareth Southgate after two years as team-mates at Middlesbrough

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has joined the England squad for training on Tuesday after being appointed as a coach for the national side.

The former Chelsea and Leeds striker was involved in sessions at the Threee Lions’ base at St George’s Park.

Pictures show the 50-year-old giving instructions to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

He was also shown in discussions with boss Gareth Southgate, assistant Steve Holland and fellow coach Paul Nevin. Hasselbaink played alongside Southgate at Premier League side Middlesbrough between 2004 and 2006.

Hasselbaink resigned as manager of League One side Burton Albion in September. The club train at St George’s Park, close to Burton-on-Trent.

He replaces Chris Powell, who left his role to focus on his position in Tottenham's academy

Powell has left his role to focus fully on his position in Tottenham’s academy.

The appointment continues the FA’s commitment to increasing diversity by giving opportunities to coaches from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Ashley Cole, Joleon Lescott and former Guyana manager Michael Johnson are on the coaching staff for the Under-21 side, with Jason Euell, Omer Riza, Marcus Bignot and Matthew Thorpe also involved at age-grade level. 

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on January 24 that Powell’s place in Southgate’s squad was uncertain after his placement on an FA scheme that ensured BAME representation across men’s teams was ending. 

Powell’s initial contract with England was due to run until Euro 2020, but Southgate was so impressed with the 53-year-old that his deal was extended until the end of last year’s World Cup.
