Women’s Soccer History Month Spotlight: Jasmine Johnson

COLUMBIA, Mo. – As March is a celebration of Women’s History Month, the University of Missouri soccer program is taking the time to honor some of the most impactful players in the program’s history, both on and off the field.

Since the start of the Mizzou soccer program in 1996, it has been home to some of the best athletes in MU history, bringing about conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in the team’s 27-year existence. Here is one of the numerous stars who has made Mizzou soccer what it is today.

Jasmine Johnson played soccer at Mizzou from 2013-2017, starting in 60 of the 73 matches she appeared in. Following her playing career, Johnson worked for the Tiger Scholarship Fund (TSF).

“I want my legacy at Mizzou soccer to be as someone that worked hard for my teammates and was a selfless player and friend,” said Johnson.

When asked about her inspiration, Johnson said, “A woman who inspired me during my time at Mizzou was my grandmother. She was an avid sports fan and was a champion for me and my sister while we played at Mizzou. As wonderful as it was to have a cheerleader, it was her life path that truly inspired me. She taught me that hard work and persistence will always win out in the end, and those are two traits I took with me to Missouri. Her values shaped me as a player, instilling hard work ethic and a fierce competitive edge. She taught me to always give my all and never let a bad play get the better of me. This shaped me as a woman and a player.”

Additionally, Johnson added when asked about what impact she hopes to have left behind for future generations, “We wouldn’t quit for the full 90+ minutes of play and we always made sure to give it our all until the end. We were relentless and I hope that I left that impact when I left; to keep going and to fight for that win until the whistle blows.”

Johnson is currently a filmmaker/content creator and works on selling scripts and building brands for businesses through content strategy.
