Tottenham boss Conte told to ‘shut up’ in £13m-a-year ‘disgrace’ as Man Utd ‘dodged a bullet’

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte shouts instructions to his players

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has been told to “shut up” and stop moaning by beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys after his outburst on Saturday.

Spurs threw away a two-goal lead against Southampton over the weekend with goals from Theo Walcott and James Ward-Prowse in the last 13 minutes securing a point for the Saints in a 3-3 draw.

With Newcastle beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 on Friday, the result against Southampton was a blow to Tottenham and Conte’s ambition to finish in the top four this season.

The Geordies are now two points behind Spurs with two games in hand and Conte did not hold back in his assessment of Tottenham and his players after their draw.

Conte fumed in the post-match press conference: “What we’re seeing in these last matches, I don’t like it. I’m not used to seeing this. I see a lot of selfish players. I don’t see a team.

“Frustration is not for today. It’s right to tell the truth and keep our eyes open – the truth is we have to give satisfaction to our fans and we are not doing this – we all have to take responsibility.

“It’s happened before with other coaches. Maybe if we start to think the players have to take responsibility it’s the right moment, otherwise, we’re out of Europe.

“From what I’m seeing to talk about the Champions League is useless because at this moment we’re not a team. We don’t have spirit, we’re not putting heart into the pitch for the badge or the sense of belonging.

“If we don’t have this we will finish the season really badly. It was a clear problem today but it’s the end of a cycle of bad results. The fans deserve much better than this team.”

But Keys had zero sympathy for Conte after the Tottenham boss chucked his players under the bus after the match.

In the closing few paragraphs of his blog, Keys wrote: “And finally….. Would someone please put Antonio Conte out of his misery? How dare Spurs pay him £13m/year only to frustrate him as they do? It’s a disgrace. The poor guy has only spent close on £100m only to take their team – er……nowhere.

“Was it Daniel Levy’s fault that Conte sent a weakened team to Sheffield United to get beaten? Come off it. They could’ve been playing in a 1/4-final yesterday but Conte tossed it off at Bramall Lane. The defeat was his fault – nobody else’s. Would we have fancied them to beat Blackburn? Of course we would.

“So shut up Antonio. The last time I checked no-one was holding a gun to your head…
