Erling Haaland breaks Man Utd legend's Champions League scoring record

Erling Haaland scored his 30th Champions League goal during Manchester City’s meeting with RB Leipzig on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player in the competition’s history to hit that tally.

The previous record was held by former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who netted 30 in his first 34 games.

That speed has been completely obliterated by Haaland, who reached 30 in just 25 matches.

Van Nistelrooy wasn’t the only United legend to see his record bested by Haaland. With 30 goals, Haaland equalled the career tally posted by Wayne Rooney, who scored his final goal in the 84th of his 85 appearances in the competition.

To keep the records tumbling, Haaland also became the youngest player to ever reach 30 Champions League goals.

At 22 years, 236 days, Haaland takes the title from career rival Kylian Mbappe, who reached 30 at 22 years, 352 days.

In Haaland’s sights now will be the records concerning 40 Champions League goals.

Van Nistelrooy holds the record for being the fastest player to reach that tally, doing so in 45 games, 14 fewer than Mbappe, who bagged his 40th in his 59th outing.

Mbappe remains the youngest player to hit 40, doing so at 23 years, 317 days.
