Man Utd legend Neville aims cheeky dig at Liverpool and Souness after Bournemouth defeat

Gary Neville speaks about Liverpool

Manchester United legend Gary Neville aimed a cheeky dig at Graeme Souness and Liverpool on Saturday after the Reds lost 1-0 to Bournemouth.

The Reds hammered Man Utd 7-0 last weekend in a match some were referring to as a ‘freak result’ but they were brought back down to earth yesterday as the Cherries edged them thanks to a goal from Philip Billings.

Mo Salah missed a crucial penalty as Liverpool looked to get back into the match at the Vitality Stadium but the result and Tottenham’s win over Nottingham Forest means they are now six points adrift of fourth place.

Following their 7-0 win over Man United at Anfield last weekend, Neville and former Liverpool midfielder Souness got into a heated debate about the performance of both sides in the first half.

When put to him by Souness that he’d said off-air that Liverpool had not played well in the first half, Neville responded: “I didn’t say that.

“I said, first half, I think Manchester United were the better team. In the second half it was just about Manchester United’s capitulation.

“I don’t think Jurgen Klopp, he’ll analyse that game tomorrow and the momentum he’ll take from that, he won’t think oh, we’re back. My point is I’ve seen Liverpool play well for five or six years and they’ve put in some of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

“They’re still not back anywhere near that. They played alright in the second half, they won the game no problem. I’ve said congratulations, well done. Congratulations. My point is when you get beat seven-nil it becomes about how bad the other team are.”

Neville and Souness continued their squabble until the end of the show before Kelly Cates gave her closing lines to the show on Sky Sports.

Cates, who is the daughter of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, said: “Liverpool, sharp off the tee at Anfield this afternoon. They’ve beaten Manchester United by seven goals to nil, it’s a record for this fixture.

“Mo Salah is now Liverpool’s record Premier League goalscorer – and they didn’t even play that well, goodnight.”

But Neville got in a final line before the closing titles, he added: “And you were live on Liverpool TV!”

And in an obvious dig at Souness and Liverpool, Neville tweeted on Saturday: “With no-one on final score today I thought I would bring you the early kick off result Bournemouth 1-0 Liverpool … and they’re playing so well.”
