West Ham United have reportedly identified former Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri as a potential candidate to replace David Moyes.
Moyes has done a superb job at West Ham over the past few seasons as he has transformed them into a side that battled for a place in Europe.
Under him, the Hammers have finished in the top seven in back-to-back seasons but they have declined this term. They are currently just a point and a place above the relegation zone ahead of this weekend’s set of fixtures.
West Ham eased their relegation fears with a 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest two weeks ago, but they followed that up with a 4-0 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Moyes is under growing pressure at the London Stadium but it was claimed earlier this week by talkSPORT’s Jim White that West Ham will “carry on” with the Scotsman even if they do get relegated.
“I’ve been speaking to someone of authority at West Ham,” White said on talkSPORT.
“The feeling there, what is dominating their thoughts at this stage of the season is Premier League survival and winning the Europa Conference League. Those are their targets.
“There is also the feeling that even if West Ham go down, David Moyes would carry on.”
Italian outlet Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness) have different information, though. They are reporting that Sarri has been ‘identified as a surprise Moyes replacement’.
The 64-year-old previously managed Chelsea during the 2018/19 campaign. They won the Europa League that term but he left in the summer after they finished third in the Premier League and lost in the EFL Cup final.
Sarri has since had spells at Serie A sides Juventus and Lazio. He has been in charge of the latter since before the 2021/22 campaign.
The report claims that Sarri has ‘recently turned down a proposal’ from the United Arab Emirates. The financial aspect of this deal was said to be ‘pharaonic’.
Sarri would like to remain at Lazio for a ‘long time’ but a ‘sensational divorce’ is described as being possible if the right opportunity arose. West Ham are ‘one of the clubs eyeing up a move’ for him.
The Hammers host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. Ahead of this game, Stan Collymore has predicted that Moyes will be let go in the summer.
