Martin Keown thinks Matt Turner’s Arsenal team-mates will struggle to trust him after his poor performance against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday evening.
The USA international is yet to play a Premier League game for the Gunners but has made seven appearances in other competitions this season.
Arsenal signed Turner from New England Revolution in the summer transfer window in a deal that could eventually reach $10m (£8.4m).
The 28-year-old was given a start on Thursday night as Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw against Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.
Arsenal opened the scoring through a William Saliba header before a Turner blunder allowed Sporting to equalise before the interval.
Sporting then took the lead through Paulinho on 55 minutes before the Premier League leaders got a leveller 28 minutes from time through a Hidemasa Morita own goal.
On Turner, Keown said on BT Sport: “Really he killed everybody with the first goal because he starts to come and then he goes back.
“Kiwior has got to do more than that too but if I’m playing regularly with this goalkeeper, I’m thinking I’m going to have to try and head things, because I can’t necessarily trust him.
“He had a first scary moments in the first half. He’s got to come and be dominant and win the ball from the corner, but he didn’t do it.
“Arsenal could have even conceded again after Sporting score when Turner made another error on the ball.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta made some changes to his side from the one that beat Bournemouth 3-2 in the Premier League at the weekend but Keown thought it was one of Gunners’ regulars who “stood out”.
“The game lacked some rhythm in the first half but William Saliba really stood out for me,” Keown added.
“The goal obviously caps his performance, it’s a great header. There was only one person winning that cross.
“He’s growing in stature now. Week in, week out, we’re seeing really good performances from him.”
Arteta, like Keown, was unhappy with the two goals Arsenal conceded against Sporting but was happy with the “resilience” they showed to get back level.
“When you concede two poor goals like we did away from home in Europe, it’s very difficult to get a positive result,” Arteta said.
“The game had different phases because we gave too many simple balls away in our own half and gave them the capacity to (exploit) transition moments which they are good at.
