For the first time since 2017, the Kansas City Comets (8-6-4) will welcome the Baltimore Blast (9-6-3) back to Cable Dahmer Arena for Mascot Night on Saturday. At halftime, mascots from various organizations will take the field.
The Comets and Blast are coming from last weekend’s matchup in Baltimore, a lopsided 9-2 win for the Blast.
Comets head coach Leo Gibson is not making any excuses for how the Comets performed in Baltimore. “The level of quality from our end wasn’t good and the energy wasn’t good.”
The Comets are looking to get back on track in front of the home fans, who lead the league in attendance and have supported the team to four straight home wins.
“We just have to try to dig in and do a better job finishing,” Gibson said. “It’s a good thing we have a home game after last weekend. We just need to focus on winning.”
The Comets are led by a group of four players: John Sosa, Zach Reget, Lucas Sousa and Leo Gibson. Sosa and Reget have each tallied 28 assists this season while Sousa has 27 and Gibson has 25.
Reget has scored seven goals in just two games at Cable Dahmer Arena since joining the Comets in a trade last month. The U.S. Futsal National Team player will look to continue building up his time with the Comets.
The Comets lead the Eastern Division on the penalty kill, escaping 60% of penalties unscathed with a league-high three shorthanded goals.
While nearly unbeatable on home turf, the Blast are not nearly as good on the road. Under head coach David Bascome, Baltimore has a 1-8 record away from home with their only win coming against the Florida Tropics in December.
Baltimore is led in scoring by forward Lucas Roque, who leads the East with 42 points from 28 goals and 14 assists. Another offensive threat is midfielder Tony Donatelli, who tallied five points last week against the Comets with a goal and four assists.
Defensively, the Blast are backed up by reigning MASL Defensive Player of the Week William Vanzela. The legendary Blast goalkeeper made a season-high 31 saves last week in addition to scoring a goal.
The Comets are in need of a win Saturday that would take them level on points with third-place Baltimore and second-place Florida.
Following Saturday’s matchup, the Comets head to Milwaukee for a quick turnaround matchup with the Wave on Sunday afternoon. Tickets for Saturday’s contest can be purchased at www.kccomets.com/tickets.
