Women’s Soccer Welcomes Grad Transfer Gia Vicari

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women’s soccer welcomes impact transfer Gia Vicari to the 2023 roster. The Georgetown transfer and dynamic forward will be a graduate student at Rutgers and will play her final year of eligibility “On the Banks” after leading the nationally ranked and three-time Big East champion Hoyas in scoring over the past three seasons.

Vicari is coming off a 2022 season that earned Second Team All-East Region honors from United Soccer Coaches, along with All-Big East First Team honors after leading Georgetown with six goals and four assists during a 15-2-5 season. The Hoyas won the 2022 Big East Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, ending the season ranked No. 19.

“We are thrilled with the addition of Gia to the 2023 class,” said head coach Mike O’Neill. “She will boast an already talented incoming group with a high level of ability and strong character. Gia’s success and experience playing at the highest level on the national stage propels the culture of our program. We are excited and looking forward to her coming “On the Banks” and having an immediate impact, both on and off the field.”

The Reading, Pennsylvania native has totaled 67 points on 25 goals and 17 assists in 76 games at Georgetown. The Hoyas have gone 41-4-13 and won three consecutive Big East titles with Vicari leading the team’s offensive efforts over the past three seasons. Eleven of her 25 goals have gone down as game-winners during that span.

“I chose Rutgers because of the people, the culture, and the program’s ambition matching my own,” Vicari said. “I wanted to be able to compete at a high level and push myself athletically while finding an academic program that was flexible and applicable to various career opportunities. I genuinely think that Rutgers will help me achieve my goals and support me in future endeavors. Rutgers had exactly what I was looking for and I genuinely felt that the coaching staff was going to do everything in their power to help me grow as a person and soccer player.”

She led the Big East in scoring with 10 goals as a sophomore in 2020 and leaves with three First Team All-Big East honors and a spot on the Top 10 all-time leading scorers in Georgetown women’s soccer history.
