Sir Alex Ferguson corrected a reporter’s question after Manchester United claimed their first trophy under Erik ten Hag on Sunday and explained how Marcus Rashford’s goalscoring form highlights an “unfortunate” reality for his former club.
Fergie was in attendance at Wembley as Casemiro and Rashford scored the first half goals for United as they beat Newcastle 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup.
Rashford’s deflected effort was his 25th goal of the season and Ferguson was asked after the game if he had seen another striker in form as good as Rashford right now.
Correcting the reporter, Ferguson said: “Well I don’t think he’s a striker. He operates from the left hand side which is fantastic. His finishing is always good, keeps his shots down which is really important.
“He’s in a great vein of form and unfortunately for us he’s the main source of goals, we could do with an extra one. But he’s doing it.”
Rashford has operated both on the left and through the middle under Ten Hag this term, but with United tipped to spend big on a new striker in the near future, the England international will likely come from wide in the main.
Rashford said in December that he likes to play in different roles depending on the opposition.
Rashford told Prime Video: “I think it depends on opposition, it depends on the personality you’re playing against.
“More often than not I prefer to play on the left but if there’s a weakness in the middle or if there’s a certain player I feel I can exploit I like to have the freedom to move and do that.”

Ferguson, who lifted 13 Premier League title as United boss, was left delighted as Ten Hag lifted his first trophy with the club after just nine months in charge.
He said: “United is based on success and he’s going the right way about it. The signings have been really good, that was important and he’s got a grip of the club. Which is really big for him.
“When you come to United you try and get off to a good start right away and he’s done it well. He really has.”
