Man Utd End Trophy Drought - 'This is the First One'

Manchester United ended their six-year trophy drought on Sunday with their 2-0 League Cup final triumph over Newcastle United much to manager Erik ten Hag’s delight.

First-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford set up the victory for United at Wembley.

It is a significant achievement for Ten Hag, who took over at United in the off-season, after years of underachievement at Old Trafford.

After a tough start initially, the Dutchman has steadied United who are still live in another three competitions as they chase numerous titles.

“First, we have to win the first one (trophy) and that is what we did today,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“I think we get a lot of inspiration from this and also more confidence that we can do it.

“We are still at the start to restore Manchester United back to where we belong, that is winning trophies. This is the first one.”

Ten Hag said the triumph, albeit in a lesser competition, showed that United were on the right path.

“It shows something, silverware, that you are on a good pathway, a good direction,” he said.

“It’s one cup, it’s February, but it shows we are on the right path. This has to be the motivation to continue on this pathway. Be happy for 24 hours but not satisfied.”

The Dutchman hailed several senior players who he felt played a key role in their triumph.

“I said before the game – Rapha Varane, Casemiro, David De Gea – They know how to win trophies,” he said.

“You need such lads on the pitch to point the team, coach the team, organise the team. Not only from a tactical perspective but also, especially, the mental perspective.

“It’s so important, the winning attitude. They have to bring it in the dressing room and bring it to the team. In difficult situations, they have to handle it and that’s what they did again.”
