Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Tottenham to allow Richarlison time to “prove himself” by giving him a run of games, explaining they’d “lose money” by selling him.
Richarlison is yet to score in the league for Spurs following his £60million transfer from Everton. That’s despite having 15 games – and six starts – to prove himself.
His only attacking output in the league has been three assists, though he did score a Champions League brace against Marseille. He made our transfer flops XI.
Despite offering little in his time at Spurs so far, he’s got eyes on him. Indeed, Real Madrid reportedly have their sights set on the Brazilian as it’s believed ‘cash-strapped Spurs might be open to negotiating’.
It’ll become clearer in the summer transfer window if that is to happen. Antonio Conte’s side’s pursuit of Pedro Porro did take a while as they were reportedly trying to negotiate Sporting Lisbon down, so they might be open to making some money.
However, Conte has been told by Agbonlahor he can still get some use out of Richarlison, rather than selling him.
“He could come good for them. But he needs game time. You can’t be bringing him on for 20 minutes every week and expect him to score goals,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s not scored in the Premier League this season because he hasn’t had the time. I’ve been there.
“When you’re brought on as a sub, you’re not warm enough, you’re not used to the pace of the game.”
Indeed, Richarlison has been introduced off the bench late on a few times this season. However, he’s also had starts in which he’s done little.
The games he has started and not impacted show why Conte might not be willing to start him too often. Some might question why he was bought at all if he’s not going to be given opportunities.
Conte might be questioning that himself given his lack of effectiveness. In any case, Agbonlahor feels selling is not the right thing to do, and Richarlison can show his quality if he’s given a few more starts.
“Conte needs to give him time and give him a run of games so he can go out and prove himself,” he added.
“If they sold him now, they’d be losing money.”
While that might be the case, if he continues in his poor form his value could plummet and they might lose even more money if they decided to sell further down the line.
